Student Living

The challenge in urban planning lies in designing buildings that harmonize with the landscape while thoughtfully addressing the spaces between them. These spaces must be well-proportioned, comfortable, and meet the needs of both residents and visitors. Consideration should be given to topography, water runoff, and drainage systems to ensure a sustainable design. Accessibility is another critical aspect, encompassing circulation, wayfinding, shelter, and bike parking. The primary goal is to create student housing, along with single-family housing to accommodate those with young children. This plan seeks to create a functional, inclusive, and environmentally conscious living environment.
This assignment was completed in pairs. Our project goal was to connect student housing on the far west side of campus with the surrounding community. The proximity to the campus orchard also inspired us to consider opportunities for residents to grow their own food. Ultimately, we decided on a layout that balanced these considerations.
However, the project was fraught with challenges. We frequently disagreed on certain elements, requiring compromises to move forward. By the time of the final presentation, we were dissatisfied with the results, particularly frustrated with visuals that did not meet our agreed standards. After the projects completion, edits were made to the final diagrams for the end of year portfolio.
